Whoops. One of the electrical sockets in my kitchen just started spurting large and really quite insistent sparks. Luckily, my keen understanding of such matters has enabled me to identify this as irregular behaviour. Have taken necessary steps of turning off the fuse, fruitlessly trying to reach my dad on the phone and making vague plans to disconnect and insulate separately the wires leading into the socket - wonder if it will do any good? *scratches chin thoughtfully* I'm hoping that was my only near fire tonight and that I'll see you all in the new year! :D

I'm spending Christmas with three generations of my family, up in the snowy Norwegian mountains. Much as I dislike winter and snow I have to admit it is spectacularly beautiful here. Our cabin is right by where my grandfather grew up, and whenever I come here there's that odd feeling of childhood recognition and of suddenly being in a place where everyone you meet looks like they're related to you. I won't say "inbred", but I will say "distinctly recognisable traits". ;)

Despite the fact that three generations of my family in one place will always mean a lot of noise, it's really calming to be up here. Oslo has been fairly mild and wet this winter, which means there's no snow. What little light there is is sucked into the asphalt; it's pretty dark and dismal. The few hours of daylight are spent working and it's pitch black every time I set foot outside. Well, apart from streetlights and general city illumination, obviously. :P But up here there's brilliant white snow; all light is reflected. Even the roads are untainted by exhaust marks, and there's just enough freshly fallen snow for it to crunch quietly beneath your feet when you go for walks. Only the odd animal track breaks the monotony. The lovely little red, wooden 18th century church rings its bells merrily. People ski in the street and it's all ridiculously idyllic.

Busy, busy, busy. Work is eating my life; people quitting and going on paternity leave doesn't mean that their jobs don't have to be done by the rest of us, unfortunately. Add to that a certain degree of winter malaise and that all combines to give me far less LJ time than I'd like. I'm REALLY looking forward to 12 days off for Christmas, phew. I hope to be back with you all fairly soon! :)

Nice fandom related things have happened during the past few weeks, though! Crappy mobile cam pic, but look at the ( Chair of Fandom Goodness )Those are wonderful prints and Christmas cards from the very talented oldenuf2nb 's Art for Dance project, the original watercolour painting the inimitable raitala did for my codpiece porn - SO good in person!!! - and a wonderful Christmas package from the incomparable calanthe_fics ! I've been itching to open them, my darling, and I still won't promise not to cave before Christmas. ;)

I'm not sure I've actually ever managed to send a Christmas card in my life, never mind in time for Christmas, but all two of you whose addresses I have can expect a late offering of naked men. :D Obviously there's more of you I'd like to send cards as well. For those who are wary of dark fics - this is more of a vignette of Fenrir Greyback and his pack than a scary story per se. I wanted to keep the language reminiscent of the cadence and poetry of the prompt, and also to bring in some folk tale elements into the mix, because I've always found the werewolves of traditional folklore much scarier than any fantasy version. So it's more of an atmospheric look at werewolf culture than anything else. That said, there are dark themes of course;  please heed the warnings if you have squicks. :)

My gift for hp_cross_fest, One Night In London was posted last weekend while, fittingly, I was on a trip to London. I've received my prompt for hp_darkfest, and this is going to be fun! :D My mind is going all sorts of disgusting places, which is exactly what I hoped for. Just, maybe it could wait until tomorrow.

When I signed up for the fest, in a sunny office during the middle of the day, I was aware but didn't really remember that the subject matter of the stray bunnies I had are actually things that seriously scare me, sometimes. As in, would absolutely terrify me as a child to the extent that I wouldn't dare go to the loo at night, and definitely not flush because the noise that makes is so startling when everything else is quiet, and I'd have to jump in and out of bed to make sure that the scaries under the bed wouldn't be able to reach my feet and grab and eat me, slowly and from the bottom up.

I've outgrown this silly, irrational fear, of course. I'm a rational adult - I know these things aren't real and, by virtue of not existing, can't hurt me. I find them fascinating in a cynically detached way. But sometimes, when I'm feeling fragile and read scary things, the fear will come back. Like right now.

I'm getting ready to jump off the bed to go to the loo - if you don't hear from me again you can just assume I have been eaten. :D

This is an AU, OOC H/D scene, inspired by some comments over at calanthe_fics  ' about codpiece rippers as being the equivalent of bodice rippers. Since I'm a costume nerd I wrote a little bit of a Renaissance H/D undressing scene, then I wrote a little porn to follow it. Unless you have a particular interest in reading un-beta'd first attempts at porn you'll probably want to skip this. :)

(ETA: the whip-cracking, thestral-riding Lord Draco and pageboy!Harry were mentioned, so the basic premise is a magical AU (undetectable in this first ficlet) with an established power imbalance. Oh, and I only just realised that I hadn't dedicated this to Cal and Push, which is purely because they were the only two readers I expected! Now that isn't the case I wanted to remedy the situation. I’m not really one for fan art usually, but it would appear that I have committed some. raitala’s drawing of Draco’s calendar shot from pushdragon’s scorching fic A Tale of Horns inspired me to have a go at Harry’s photo shoot.

I'm crap at anatomy (and haven’t really picked up a pencil to draw in the last, oh, fifteen years), so it's not perfect. But I was lucky enough at a party recently to meet a handsome young man who was quite willing to strip off his shirt and pose for a couple of reference photos, so the upper body at least shouldn't be too far off. What wonderful things camera phones and willing young men are! :D I don't really do backgrounds and drawing wet skin defeats me, so I’ll ask you to either imagine the water or consider this a picture taken before Charlie conjured the bucket.

After writing all those caveats I realise this is quite a meagre offering, but since I've made it I might as well post it. Concrit is always welcome, and if anyone has any tips on photographing pencil drawings to make them clearer than this has turned out I’d be grateful.
